CITY OF CORDELL
A winter storm with snow, extreme cold, and strong winds is expected this weekend and into next week. Conditions may become dangerous quickly. The City of Cordell encourages all residents to prepare now and avoid unnecessary travel.
City crews will focus on emergency response, utilities, and critical services during the storm. Normal services may be delayed.
STAY INFORMED
- Monitor local weather forecasts and National Weather Service updates
• Pay attention to watches, warnings, and advisories
• Follow the City of Cordell website and Facebook page for updates
• Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary
HAVE A WINTER STORM PLAN
- Know where your family will shelter if power is lost
• Plan how you will stay warm if utilities are interrupted
• Make sure everyone knows emergency contact numbers
• Have a plan for pets, elderly family members, and those with medical needs
PREPARE YOUR HOME
- Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air around pipes
• Let faucets drip if temperatures remain below freezing for extended periods
• Remove garden hoses from outdoor faucets
• Drain and shut off sprinkler systems if possible
• Know where your home’s main water shutoff is located
• Check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
• Never use grills, camp stoves, or generators indoors
PREPARE A WINTER DISASTER KIT
Have enough supplies for at least 3–7 days, longer if possible.
- Non-perishable food and bottled water
• Extra blankets, coats, gloves, hats, and warm socks
• Flashlights and extra batteries
• Battery-powered radio
• Medications and medical supplies
• Pet food and supplies
• Phone chargers and battery packs
VEHICLE SAFETY
Avoid travel if possible. If you must travel:
- Keep your gas tank full
• Carry blankets, warm clothing, food, and water
• Keep a flashlight, phone charger, and basic tools in your vehicle
• Let someone know where you are going
• If you become stranded, stay with your vehicle
ALTERNATE HEATING SAFETY
- Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything flammable
• Never leave heaters unattended
• Do not overload electrical outlets
• Never use charcoal grills or fuel-burning devices indoors
• Ensure proper ventilation for any approved heating source
CHECK ON OTHERS
- Check on elderly family members, neighbors, and those living alone
• Make sure they have heat, food, and medications
• Offer help safely if conditions allow
PET SAFETY
- If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pet
• Keep pets indoors during extreme cold
• Outdoor shelters must be heated safely and properly
• Vehicles are NOT adequate shelter for animals
LIMIT TRAVEL – SAFETY FIRST
During winter storms, unnecessary travel puts everyone at risk.
- Slick roads and poor visibility increase crash risk
• Emergency responders and road crews need clear access
• City employees and equipment are at risk when roads are crowded
Please stay home unless travel is essential.
CITY SERVICES DURING THE STORM
- Emergency response services will remain operational
• Road clearing will focus on emergency and critical routes
• Trash and other services may be delayed
• Power and water crews will respond as conditions allow
Please be patient and understanding during severe weather.
REPORTING EMERGENCIES AND ISSUES
- For emergencies, call 911
• Report power outages through dispatch
• Report water issues to the dispatch
• Do not approach downed power lines — assume they are energized
